Two separate assaults reported at Elkhart schools

(Sam Householder/Elkhart Truth)

A student and teacher from two separate schools are recovering from two separate assaults Wednesday.

The first incident happened near Elkhart Memorial High School at about 10 a.m. Wednesday, according to the Elkhart Truth.

A high school student bumped into someone she was feuding with on the 1100 block of Kent Street. That person threw the girl to the ground, punched her several times, and then ran away. The victim regained consciousness and walked back to school. The nurse treated her for minor injuries. No word on if the assailant was tracked down by Elkhart police.

Then, at 3:10 p.m. Wednesday, a 13-year-old boy was arrested by Elkhart police after allegedly assaulting a teacher at Hawthorne Elementary. The teacher approached the student, who had apparently violated the school’s cell phone policy. The boy became aggressive and grabbed the teacher’s arm, giving her bruises. The boy was separated from the teacher by the time police and his father arrived.

That’s a good question and, given how schools protect information on their students, one we probably won’t get an answer to. The most likely reason was he may have been held back before, but that’s just speculation. Hawthorne goes up to 6th grade, which typically caters to 11-12 year olds.
