INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — A Democratic-aligned group at the center of an Indiana investigation into possible voter fraud says it is focused on registering black voters because the state had the nation’s lowest overall turnout in the 2014 election.
Patriot Majority USA president Craig Varoga told The Associated Press in an interview Thursday that the group focused solely on Indiana this year and began registering black voters in May.
It had collected 45,000 voter registration applications by the time Indiana State Police raided the group’s Indianapolis office on Oct. 4. State Police say their investigation is focusing on possible forgeries of signatures.
Varoga says Indiana’s voter database is a mess and the Republican Secretary of State Connie Lawson is trying to interfere with a legal voter registration effort.
