The sun is out which means you should be too. Here are some of our favorite places to dine outdoors — both at restaurants and at picnic spots — around the Gateway Mile.

Black Crow on Main

This cute cafe has a healthy menu for breakfast and lunch — and many items are vegan or vegetarian. Enjoy patio seating with your freshly prepared order.

523 Tap and Grill

Whether you want to enjoy an artfully prepared meal or a classic cocktail (or both), you’ll enjoy the view from 523’s outdoor patio located at the south end of South Main Street.

Iechyd Da Brewing Company

For the 21+ crowd, enjoy Iechyd Da’s wide beer selection, wines blended by Elkhart entrepreneur Carl Tiedemann, house-made sodas and an outstanding, fresh and delicious food menu.

McCarthy’s On The Riverwalk

Looking for classic American and Irish comfort food? Want a refreshing drink to wash down your meal? Look no further than the covered patio at McCarthy’s, which overlooks the Elkhart River and the Elkhart Riverwalk and offers a great view of downtown’s cityscape.

The Electric Brew

Looking for breakfast, lunch or dessert? Stop by The Electric Brew and enjoy your coffee or baked treat at a sidewalk table — with plenty of room for your pup too!

Five Star Dive Bar

The dive bar isn’t the only thing that’s “five star” here. Bring your motorcycle for bike night or just enjoy a great burger and cold beer at Five Star’s patio.

B on the River

Enjoy the view of the river, Central Park and downtown Elkhart while you sip on your coffee, enjoy a baked good or take a bite of a freshly grilled panini. Don’t forget to treat yourself to a scoop of gelato before you leave.

The Vine

Though the restaurant is under new ownership, the locally famous “Mary’s Garbage Salad” remains on the menu. Try that or any of the other creative and fresh menu items and drinks while enjoying the alleyway al fresco seating right in the heart of historic, downtown Elkhart.

If you want a more private or casual dining experience, there are plenty of beautiful places to have a picnic — just pack a lunch or pick up an order from one of the 25 restaurants located in downtown Elkhart, like New Paradigm Burger and Brew House or Hotdogeddy’s. Here are a few of our favorite spots:

Island Park

A short walk from Main Street, this park has several picnic tables and benches where you can enjoy your picnic. The park is an island in the middle of the Elkhart River, so you’ll have great water views wherever you are.

Lundquist Bicentennial Park

Walk over the southeast bridge from Island Park and you’ll find yourself at Lundquist Bicentennial Park. It’s part of the riverwalk and has plenty of open green space and a couple benches to sit at while you eat.

Benches along Main Street

Who says you have to go to a park for a picnic? Main Street has some great views — and some great seats! Find a bench and enjoy the hustle and bustle.

Elkhart Riverwalk

Feel like getting a walk in with your meal? Stroll the Elkhart Riverwalk and you’ll find a few benches to sit at along the river to enjoy your meal, especially near the NIBCO Water and Ice Park.

Wellfield Botanic Gardens

Pack a brown bag lunch and head on down to the Wellfield Botanic Gardens. For a small fee, you can enjoy your lunch in these beautiful designed gardens centered around part of Christiana Creek.

Central Park

Get the best of both worlds: the hustle of downtown Elkhart and the serenity of the Elkhart River. Sit on one of the bench swings, benches, tables or platform or lay down a blanket near the elk statue. There’s plenty of space to enjoy a relaxing meal in the heart of downtown Elkhart.
