Coroners ID Illinois man fatally shot by police in northwest Indiana

DYER, Ind. (AP) — Authorities have identified a man fatally shot by officers after a police chase in south suburban Chicago.

The Lake County, Indiana, coroner’s office evening identified the man as 33-year-old Mark P. Coffey of Chicago Heights, Illinois. It says he suffered gunshot wounds but didn’t specify how he died.

The Crete, Illinois, police chief says his officers chased the suspected car thief into nearby Dyer, Indiana, early Thursday and he appeared to have a gun when the officers confronted him. Chief James Paoletti says the driver fled back into Illinois, where the car hit a pedestrian.

Authorities say the car returned to Dyer, where Coffey was shot by Indiana officers.
