A new fire station could be coming to the east side of South Bend.
Fire Station 9 is nearly 100 years old and with age comes problems that need to be fixed.
The South Bend Fire Department is looking to move out of the building on the 2500 block of Mishawaka Avenue and ABC 57 reports the department has secured several attached properties just a few blocks down across the street from Potawatomi Zoo.
At a budget hearing this week, Fire Chief Steve Cox says the department will set aside $183,000 for the upgrade, but will also be seeking a $5 million bond to cover construction.
That would more than cover construction costs, with the rest of the bond being applied to creating a new classroom for firefighters.

Is there a problem with the training classrooms at the Luther Taylor training center or am I missing something here? No matter how much is needed if you are going to float a bond pad the heck out of the request. Mar-a-Lago on Mishawaka perhaps?
The St. Joe County Public Library has a branch on Mishawaka Avenue, right down the street from the new fire station that has meeting rooms that have already been paid for by the taxpayer. Maybe you could use those classrooms for training instead of borrowing more money that the taxpayers will be on the hook for.
