Opponents of Christopher Columbus are turning their angst towards Notre Dame.
Notre Dame has been home to 12 murals of Christopher Columbus painted by artist Luigi Gregori that feature him in various settings.
In one instance, Columbus is show celebrating his contest of Grenada and is seen showing off Native Americans he brought with him to Europe to Spanish royalty. Others depict blacks in ways opponents to Columbus feel are stereotypical and demeaning.
The South Bend Tribune reports that an open letter signed by 340 students, employees, and alums addressed to the Reverend John Jenkins was published in The Observer paper Tuesday.
The murals have been in Notre Dame’s halls since 1884, but movements to have them removed have endured since the 1990s.

Rewriting history and removing things we find distasteful doesn’t make what happened go away. When did we stop looking at things as historical or “at a point in time” and allow this politically correct crap to take over?? Anyone with a brain or shred of common sense knows that most Americans do NOT look at these paintings as acceptable treatment of people today! It is just an example of a few wanting to manipulate the masses. Let’s destroy the Mona Lisa because you find her barely there smile offensive!
It’s unfortunate these 340 people are so ignorant of history, but that’s been a trend for some time now. A little research into things before protesting them would go a long way toward keeping yourself from looking foolish!
Not counting Alumni this number (340) represents approximately 2% of ND students and staff. The fact that it is even a story is sad. Media will do anything to stir the pot and keep it swirling. By this logic any statue of Mother Mary and all crosses have to go. It would be offensive to all non-Catholics. If ND bows to this ridiculous nonsense I will be done supporting them in any fashion. I hope ND applies common sense to this and all situations like it. This is not the first time this has happened but I have a feeling in our media crazed insanely liberal society it will get more attention than before. How about a petition to remove the people that signed this petition? I bet it would get a lot more than 340 signatures.
