Dangerous weekend on area roads

Emergency crews in Cass County, Mich. were busy dealing with several crashes over the holiday weekend.

Poor weather and road conditions were said to be factors in a head-on crash that happened around 8:30 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 24, on U.S. 12 near Fir Road.  A 28-year-old Niles resident was traveling westbound and lost control of his vehicle, crossing the center lane hitting another car.

A 22 yr old Elkhart resident received minor injuries and was taken to Memorial Hospital. A 7 month-old child and 2 year-old old child escaped injury. In the eastbound vehicle that was headed eastbound, a 24 year-old Elkhart woman escaped injury, but a passenger in that car complained of chest pains. A 10 month-old child also suffered minor injuries. Both were taken to Elkhart General Hospital.

A 23-year-old Cassopolis woman was injured in a rollover crash on Christmas Eve. Cass County Sheriff’s deputies were called around 1 p.m. to the area of Dailey Road, south of Jefferson Center Street were they say the woman went off the road and the vehicle overturned. The driver was taken to Borgess Hospital in Dowagiac for treatment.

Alcohol could be a factor in a crash that happened on Friday, Dec. 22, on Chain Lake Street near Wade Road in Calvin Township. The Cass County Sheriff’s Office says a 50 year-old Vandalia man ran off the roadway. His vehicle went into a ditch and hit a driveway, causing it to roll. The man was takne to the hospital for treatment.
