Fewer St. Joseph County restaurant code violations reported in 2017

If you’re thinking that you don’t hear about a restaurant in St. Joseph County being closed by the Health Department as often as you used to…you’re right.

There were five food service businesses closed temporarily by the Health Department due to violations in 2017. That’s down a sharp two-thirds from the 15 that were shut down in the year before.

The South Bend Tribune reports that health officials are giving some of the credit to media outlets and social media, for playing a role informing the community of the violations. They say that kind of negative attention inspires other businesses to make sure that they aren’t operating with health code violations, so they can avoid the unwanted publicity of a closure.

Since inspections are random, officials say restaurant owners and managers more likely to stay in a constant state of readiness.

Maybe we should use social media to shame our schools so they don’t get ‘F’ ratings again this year.

I don’t know where the health department is looking but I find this article totally unbelievable! You can walk into any resturant and find multiple violations on any day. If you want a really safe meal, go to your local Mishawaka public school. They get written up for an open trash dumpster that is NOT “theirs” clear on the other side of the school! You will find hair totally covered in hair nets as it should be and if a man has a beard, it will be covered in a beard net as required by law. This story is a joke. I bet any number of people can tell stories about food preparers and cooks preparing food with gloves, moving on to take money then making sandwiches with the same gloves. That’s just the beginning.
