Bethel College graduate says he lost on-campus job because he was gay

A recent Bethel College graduate, who had hoped to keep his on-campus job this summer, says he lost that job because he is gay.

Kyle Walterhouse, an aspiring music teacher, chose Bethel because of its strong degree work for both music and education. He told the South Bend Tribune that, as a student, he signed the school’s covenant that forbids homosexual behavior, but says after graduation he felt free to be himself, and disclosed a relationship on Facebook.

He claims that when he refused to change his status at Bethel’s insistence, he was fired.

In 2017 the 7th Circuit Court, which covers northern Indiana, ruled that sexual orientation is a protected class under the Civil Rights Act. However, laws on the books in Indiana such as the Religious Freedom Restoration Act give certain exceptions to religious institutions.

Walterhouse has not said anything about persuing legal action, but says he’s trying to make a point.

It is all a set up. Attach the churches. Get inside and find a way to destroy it. If it has anything to do with the Bible they have to infiltrate and destroy. It was never about having a job, if it was, he never would have brought up his sex practices in public. It is about getting HIS name out there and destroying any Bible based program or person who dares challenge the authority of the homosexual.

I’m glad to see that Bethel College still holds to at least some Biblical standards. They’ve compromised in many areas, but it’s good to see at least some backbone left.
