Victim, suspect in deadly shooting at American Legion Post in South Bend identified

The St. Joseph County Metro Homicide Unit has positively identified the victim from the fatal shooting at the American Legion Post 284, and his family has been notified.

The shooting took place in the late evening hours of Friday, Dec. 14.

The victim is identifed as Theodore Braun, 25, of South Bend.

Bruce Bennett, 59, of South Bend, was arrested in connection with this investigation and was booked into the St. Joseph County Jail early on Saturday morning on preliminary suspicion of murder.

Formal criminal charges are expected to be filed on Monday, December 17.

The following is a statement from The American Legion Department of Indiana Commander, Rodney Strong concerning shooting:

“The American Legion Family has suffered a loss this holiday season. Our thoughts and prayers are with South Bend Post 284 as they begin the mourning process. As an organization of veterans, we know the cost of violence. With this knowledge we dedicate ourselves to peace and mutual helpfulness to our communities across Indiana. We encourage all of our Legion Family to stay safe this holiday season, use caution and be vigilant.”

The American Legion Department of Indiana is comprised of more than 77,000 military service veterans who have served honorably during times of conflict in defense of their nation and has been active within Indiana since 1919. The Indiana American Legion has represented veterans from every major conflict since World War II to Iraq and Afghanistan within its membership.
