Setback for homeless apartments rezoning in South Bend

Tuesday saw a setback for a proposal that would build 22 new apartments for the homeless in South Bend.

A public hearing by the Area Plan Commission saw a number of people who live near the proposed site in the 1500 block of West Washington. All but one of the 10 who spoke were not in favor of the development and expressed concern that they and their neighbors needed to have more input.

The Commission took three votes and were unable to reach a decision about whether to rezone the vacant lot for the development.

The request for a zoning change has been sent to the South Bend Common Council without a recommendation.
