Indiana Attorney General Curtis Hill wants a special session of the Indiana Legislature to decide on whether Governor Eric Holcomb’s COVID-19-related orders have gone too far.
In a letter sent Friday to Holcomb and leaders of the General Assembly, Hill questioned the governor’s ability to continue issuing executive orders in response to the pandemic and called for a special legislative session to “address public governance challenges” caused by the virus.
Hill says while orders made near the beginning of the pandemic were justified, the fact that Holcomb has signed 38 such orders since March, which have included statewide mandates on school and business closures, limits on public gatherings, and requirements for mask-wearing and social distancing, makes his grounds for those orders “shakier by the day.”

Orders should be limited to 30 days. If renewed or modified in any way we need the consent of the governed through our representatives in the state legislature. Otherwise a tyrant could just keep renewing orders with no check or balance. Checks and balance is the core principle of our Republic organization.
