Child; Man injured in accidental shooting

Two people, including an 8 year old child, were injured in Cass County when a firearm malfunctioned. Police say the 8 year old and a 28 year old man were target shooting when the malfunction happened. The exact nature of the malfunction is unknown.

Both were taken to the hospital in South Bend for treatment and both were last listed in stable condition.

Know the 4 rules. Follow the 4 rules. Love the 4 rules.
1. All guns are always loaded
2. Never let the muzzle cover anything you are not willing to destroy
3. Keep your fingers off the trigger until your sights are on the target
4. Be sure of your target and what is beyond it

Please describe the “malfunction” In 60 years of shooting I have had ONE due to a worn sear disconnector AND never ever ever have one pointed at a person

I’ve had a shotgun barrel blow up. It looked like something that would happen to Elmer Fudd. A chunk of it was missing, it looked like it whipped past my head judging from the piece that was still attached…

Scary, but so super rare as to be dismissed. More likely these two just were clearing a squib load.

Secondhand information appears to indicate this was a muzzle loader barrel failure.
