A man has been charged with 5 felonies in connection to a shooting, on Saturday, Jan. 2, in the 500 block of W. Marion Street in South Bend.

Police in St. Joseph County say Quincy Isaiah Lunford, 19, shot Andrew Blankenship, 39, in the back of the head.

The two men met a few days before, when Blankenship gave Lunford clothes to wear, because Lunford was homeless.

Blankenship’s girlfriend said she saw Lunford walking around with a gun. Later that night, as Blankenship and his girlfriend tried to fix a snowblower, there was a loud “pop.”

Another person inside the house says they saw Lunford standing at the back door with a rifle. After this sighting, several people called 911 to report a man walking down Lincolnway West, holding a rifle.

A man named Donald Prochnow also called police to report his car had been stolen by a man with a rifle. The man then drove off to the South Bend International Airport.

St. Joseph County police eventually found Lunford by a crashed van with the rifle in his hands. He was arrested, and later admitted to both shooting Blankenship and stealing Prochnow’s van.

He is charged with Attempted Murder, Aggravated Battery, Armed Robbery, Battery by Means of a Deadly Weapon and Battery Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury.

Lunford has an initial hearing scheduled for 1 p.m. on Tuesday.

No good deed goes unpunished.
