A June 12 event in downtown Goshen is meant to get people moving while raising funds for a new anti-human trafficking organization.

Sarah Virgil outlined the event for the Goshen Board of Works on Monday. Virgil is the founder of Roller-skate to Liberate, a newer not-for-profit organization that works to take preventative action against human trafficking and exploitation.

She said human trafficking and exploitation can happen even in communities like Goshen.

Participants can skate, bicycle, run, dance or make any other kind of movement as they follow the loop through downtown Goshen. There will be 10 spots along the way with activities meant to promote healthy minds, bodies and relationships.

Sign-up information is online here.

The event is a fundraiser for both her organization and Bashor Children’s Home, which will receive 10 percent of sponsorships and donations toward its new facility to help young survivors of abuse, human trafficking and exploitation.

Virgil asked the board to approve a number of road closures for the 1.3 mile route she mapped out. Other locations would need someone out there to direct traffic.

Board members agreed to take up her request in two weeks, after the city has had a chance to meet with organizers and discuss the plan in detail. Mayor Jeremy Stutsman said he supports the event but he’d like to find a plan that would be easier on the street and police departments
