Goshen Community Schools’ juniors may need fewer credits to graduate next year.
The school board on Monday heard a staff proposal to lower the required credits from the district’s 43 to the state-minimum 40.
In his proposal, Goshen High School principal Barry Younghans said the rationale for the change is to benefit students who are struggling to graduate. He said those struggling students need to focus on mandatory classes rather than electives.
Superintendent Steve Hope added that it was common in the late 1980s and early 1990s for high schools to add additional credits to the state minimum. At that time, he said, the notion was, more credits meant a greater level of educational rigor.
No action was taken by the board as the proposal was just a discussion item.

Too hard to graduate?
Let’s dumb it down some more! Standards are for suckers.
The Dumbing down of America has come to Goshen Indiana.
How sad that this is what our county has come to!
We need to stand up to the liberal taking over the lead of DUMBING DOWN of America.
Rick — Did you really just assign a political designation to this proposal because you don’t like the policy? I’m not sure what being liberal or conservative has to do with total credit hours required for graduation.
