The St. Joseph County Health Department voted to withdraw the enforcement of businesses receiving fines due to unmasked customers.

The department council voted 8-0 in full agreement to end the enforcement of wearing masks in area businesses as St. Joseph County followed the CDC’s revised mask policies.

“Vaccinated people can feel more comfortable without masks now, but we certainly still have a ways to go in the county, particularly certain parts. So, I hope that our residents step up and we become vaccinated and I applaud the health department for all they’re doing,” said Diana Hess, St. Joseph County Council Member.

The county never reported any fines being extended to businesses for customers not wearing masks.

With this change, businesses are still empowered to require customers to wear masks upon entry.
