Governor Whitmer is asking Michigan lawmakers to approve “hero pay” for essential workers in the state.
Thursday, health care workers gathered in Detroit and shared their stories with the governor. They’ve been on the front lines of the pandemic for more than a year, putting in long hours and running the risk of bringing the virus home to their loved ones.
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics says the median wage for a certified nursing assistant last year was $14.82 an hour.
M-Live reports that Whitmer is supporting a pair of resolutions introduced by state legislators calling for additional pay, but no specific dollar amount has been discussed. That pay bump would cover other workers, as well.
