MPD: Security not hired for party at Heritage Square which ended in gunfire

(Jon Zimney/95.3 MNC)

The Mishawaka Police Department issued a statement on Wednesday, June 23, regarding concerns about the June 20 shooting in the parking lot of Heritage Square that ended with a tragic loss of life and four others injured:

According to documents recently received, the Juneteenth Summer Bash was promoted by two individuals by the names of Brandon Gates and Jerimy Robinson of Elkhart. They had contracted the Heavenly Goat to use their facility for their event. The Juneteenth Summer Bash was advertised through social media and had the appearance of being an indoor event.

Mishawaka Police was provided with a copy of the contract between the promoter and the Heavenly Goat that states law enforcement security was required. It has since been learned that law enforcement was not hired for this event.

Although scheduled as an inside event, overflow spilled out into the parking lot. The circumstances surrounding the Juneteenth Summer Bash are being reviewed by both Mishawaka Police and Indiana State Excise Police. Parties found to be responsible will be held accountable. The Metro Homicide Unit is conducting the ongoing investigation regarding the shooting incident.

The City of Mishawaka, in conjunction with the Mishawaka Police Department, are reviewing current City Ordinances to make changes as necessary to prevent such tragedies from happening in the future.

The people celebrating Juneteenth have a lot of overlap with the people who want to defund the police.

Is anyone really shocked that they didn’t hire the police for security? DUH!

It will be interesting to see the story and background of the “promoters” I know when our group has a large gathering we need city permission, must hire Police, and buy one day insurance. ( We know the rules and do it right) How did a business rent a space without having these contracts in place? I can imagine civil suits will follow from all the Lost Fathers Day business as businesses were forced to remain closed. Can the News find out if these were the promoters real names? Note friends who heard gunshots and went outside said the crowd they say was 400-500 folks fleeing
