An Elkhart man is accused of striking a 5-year-old with an SUV and then fleeing the scene.

20-year-old Donovan Phommaha was arrested following the hit-and-run collision.

It happened last week, at West Indiana and Ashland avenues.

Police say Phommaha struck the child, knocking him to the ground, and then continued driving off.

The Elkhart Truth reports the boy’s dad said they were crossing the street when a red Dodge Journey approached.

He said he tried to pull his son back from the road but couldn’t do it in time.

The child was treated for a bruised hip, scrapes to his leg and scratches to his face and chin.

Phommaha is charged with leaving the scene of an accident, being an operator never licensed and possession of marijuana.
