Dowagiac Police arrest suspect driver in hit-and-run collision

UPDATE: The Dowagiac Police Department reports that they have made an arrest in the hit-and-run crash, Tuesday, that left a motorcyclist in critical condition.

Dowagiac Police received information of a possible suspect in this incident. Officers made contact with the suspect, a 37-year-old female from Dowagiac, and she confessed to striking the motorcycle which caused it to crash and then leaving the scene after the crash.

Police were advised by the suspect that after the crash she took her vehicle home and placed it in the garage. Police located the vehicle which was impounded. The investigation revealed that the suspect’s driver’s license was revoked when this crash occurred.

The suspect was arrested for Hit and Run Accident Causing serious injury, Operating While License Revoked Causing Serious Impairment of Bodily Function, and Moving Violation Causing Serious Injury. She was lodged at the Cass County Jail on the above mentioned charges. The name of the suspect is being withheld pending her arraignment in Cass County 4th District Court. All charges are pending authorization from the Cass County Prosecutor’s Office.

Dowagiac Police were advised that the victim remains in critical condition at Bronson Hospital in Kalamazoo.

ORIGINAL STORY: Police in Dowagiac are searching for the driver in a hit-and-run case in which a motorcyclist was critically hurt.

The crash happened around 2:45 p.m. on Monday, Sepp. 13, at Spruce Street near State Road.

The investigation determined that a motorcycle driven by a 34-year-old Dowagiac man was travlling south on Spruce St/M-51 approaching State Rd/M-62.  A vehicle also travelling south changed lanes into the motorcyclist’s lane which caused him to swerve to the side of the road, strike the curb, and crash into a street sign.  The vehicle that changed lanes fled the scene west on M-62.

The motorcyclist was transported to Ascension/Borgess Lee Memorial Hospital in critical condition.  He was then flown to Kalamazoo Acension Borgess Hospital by West Michigan AirCare for further treatment of his injuries.

Dowagiac Police are attempting to locate the second vehicle which is described as an early 2000’s full-Sized Chevy Suburban, tan or gold in color.  The vehicle was last seen travelling west on M-62 from Dowagiac. Please see the attached photo of the possible suspect vehicle that was captured by surveillance video in the area of this crash.  Witnesses described the driver as a white female with brown hair.

Just a suggestion for law makers. If a driver who should not be driving is stopped – the car is impounded and sold. It will not matter who owns the car. Other countries do this to prevent ” friends” loaning cars to folks they know should not be driving. There is of course and exemption for cars reported stolen. Somehow, She had a car, of course without insurance.

Yeah except, I’m sure there are plenty of people that tell people they have a license, and don’t. Just because you have a physical license card doesn’t mean you have a license. Many people would have thier cars sold unfairly. Can’t do a license check on everyone.
