South Bend man sentenced on federal weapons-related charges

Steven Polito, 24, of South Bend, was sentenced in United States District Court after pleading guilty to being a felon in possession of a firearm, announced United States Attorney Clifford D. Johnson.

Polito was sentenced to 51 months in prison followed by 1 year of supervised release.

According to documents in the case, in April 2021, Polito possessed several firearms after having been previously convicted of a felony. One of those firearms was a semi-automatic capable of accepting a high-capacity magazine.

This case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, with the assistance of the South Bend Police Department. This case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Frank E. Schaffer.

Zimney implies that a “semi-automatic capable of accepting high-capacity magazines” is a more serious crime than the simple possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. It is not. Such firearms are legal and ubiquitous today. Convicted felons may not possess any firearms, including a single-shot .22 bolt-action rifle. So pointing out that an AR-15 or similar firearm was in this individual’s possession is tantamount to a political comment, not news reporting.

I didn’t imply anything. I simply reported what the judge’s sentence was. We report what happened. You don’t have to like what happened, but I think your real issue is with the judge.

It wasn’t clear that you were directly quoting the report instead of paraphrasing. I thought the same thing as Dr Coppes.

Kudos to you for replying, however!
