Bill to remove turn signal law under may be considered by Indiana lawmakers

Have you ever received a ticket for not using your turn signal? One Indiana lawmaker wants to fix that.

According to the General Assembly’s website, a bill by Republican Aaron Freeman would make it no longer a requirement for Hoosiers to use turn signals 200 feet before changing lanes or turning, nor would they have to use turn signals 300 feet before changing lanes in a 50-mph zone.

Freeman told WISH-TV that the point of his bill is to address confusion in laws dealing with turn signals, and his goal is to get rid of the law that requires a specific distance on when you have to signal.

In a social media video a few years ago, Indiana State Police Sgt. John Perrine addressed the importance of using turn signals, sarcastically pointing out that all vehicles have a “standard feature” that “prevents crashes and will help with road rage.”

“If you look at your steering wheel, to the left side, there is this stick that comes out. It’s pretty incredible. It’s called a turn signal,” Perrine said.

The General Assembly will discuss Freeman’s bill when they reconvene in January.

Simplifying the distance-to-turn requirement is common sense. Elimination of a turn signal law would be totally ridiculous. I foresee only lawyers and body shops celebrating an elimination.

Like many laws they just need to be enforced. Like obstructing the flow of traffic by driving slow in the left lane of a divided highway.

Don’t changed the laws; if they are unnecessary eliminate them, if not enforce them.

Why doesn’t Mr. Freeman use his capacity as a lawmaker on something more important to the voting public? (Just about anything would be more helpful than this attempt at ‘simplifying driving laws’)
He’ll be receiving many angry letters from Indiana drivers if this thing is passed!

How about instead of using distance as a metric, use time? Then instead of a varying amount of feet based on speed (most people couldn’t judge 200 feet if they tried) they would have a fixed number (3?) of seconds to signal before the turn (most people know how long 3 seconds is).

This is another case where the law was poorly conceived, and it does need to be updated. People still need to use turn signals though.

While we are at it, can we go ahead and mandate amber turn signals on the rear of cars now? Red turn signals in back is just silly and confusing.

Hey maybe we could have signs at the exact point to which a person would have to turn on their turn signal before turning. You know like all the other signs people ignore……. You can’t fix stupid, just watch out for them.
