Some Elkhart police officers rescued a carjacking suspect from the vehicle they say he stole.
The incident happened shortly after 1 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 29.
Officers responded to a call regarding the carjacking of a black Jeep Grand Cherokee in the 29900 block of New Castle Drive in Elkhart.
An officer passed the male suspect in the Grand Cherokee. As
the officer was turning around to travel westbound on County Road 108, the suspect fled in the Grand Cherokee.
A brief pursuit ensued with the male suspect crashing at County Road 108 and County Road 1.
The Grand Cherokee caught on fire, and the male suspect was trapped inside.
Three officers were able to extricate the suspect from the vehicle before the vehicle became fully engulfed.
The male suspect, who is in his mid-30’s, was the only occupant of the Jeep. He was taken to the hospital for treatment
and at last update was in serious condition.
All three officers were treated for smoke inhalation and released from the hospital.
One of the officers suffered injuries to his hand.

There’s a better way to handle carjacking if it’s not an abduction. Fewer wrecks, fewer injuries, less impact on innocents, more saved cars. The “thrill of the chase” isn’t worth it.
Sure, just let the thief get away with it and hope you can catch him later. Better hope he doesn’t kill anyone next time in the process.
I’m not sure how letting a carjacker continue to steal cars results in “more saved cars” though…
I bet you’d feel a LOT differently about this if it was YOU who was carjacked.
The thrill of the theft isn’t worth it either. There’s a better way to handle crime and it’s not just letting it happen; it’s stopping the worthless thieving SOBs in their tracks so others don’t follow their path.
