Spring Break travel expected to be strong in 2022

INDIANAPOLIS-The Indianapolis Airport Authority believes the upcoming spring break travel season will be a strong one.

“We see about 30% more seats available for people to fly than at this time last year. We’re really close to the same level of seats being available that we had pre-pandemic in 2019, said Marsha Stone, director of commercial enterprise for the Indianapolis Airport Authority, in an interview with Inside Indiana Business.

The airport anticipates its airline partners will offer more than 110,000 passenger seats per week during this March.

“That’s nearly 16,000 seats per day in March, so the numbers are looking good. In fact, those numbers are pretty close overall – just 9 percent down – from our airline partners’ pre-pandemic seat capacity in 2019,” said Indianapolis Airport Authority Executive Director Mario Rodriguez.

43 nonstop flights are on the roster at the Indianapolis airport for March of 2022 compared to 45 for March 2019.

Rodriguez says they have seen a significant increase in seat capacity for Florida destinations that include Tampa, Fort Lauderdale, Sarasota, Fort Myers, and Miami.

Also in March 2022, Indy airport airlines will offer two more flights per week to Cancun compared to March 2019 – which is 113 percent more weekly seats.

“Seat capacity is an important indicator for the Indy airport. It shows the airlines’ confidence in the Indianapolis market, and that means more opportunity for Hoosier travelers,” said Stone.

Airport executives say early morning flights (5 am-8 am) are the most impacted by the travel increase, which is why they urge you to get to the airport at least two hours early.
