Queen Elizabeth II dead at 96

Queen Elizabeth II has passed away at the family estate in Balmoral, Scotland.

The monarch, who has reigned in the United Kingdom since the death of her father in 1952, was 96. She was the second-longest reigning monarch in world history, behind King Louis XIV of France, who ruled for over 72 years before his death in 1715.

Her 70 years on the throne had been marked by an ever-evolving global political landscape, and saw an acceleration of the decolonization that had dominated the British Empire for centuries. Never afraid to get her hands dirty, she served as a mechanic in the auxiliary territorial service during World War II, and was an avid sportswoman.

During her reign she worked alongside 14 American Presidents, dating back to the last days of the Truman administration. Just days ago she appointed her 15th Prime Minister, Liz Truss. Her first was Winston Churchill. Churchill was born in 1874; Truss, more than a century later in 1975.

Her eldest son, Prince Charles, is the heir apparent. He is 73 years old. His wife Camilla becomes Queen Consort.

Charles will deliver a broadcast to the U.K. at 6 p.m. local time. A service of remembrance will also take place at St. Paul’s Cathedral.

Parliament will suspend all business for 10 days as the British people mourn their Queen.

Elizabeth II was preceded in death by her husband, Prince Philip, last year.

🇬🇧 Queen Elizabeth ll has always been the queen in my lifetime. It’s going to take some time to adjust to the new King Charles. History repeats itself when Queen Victoria died in 1901 and her son Edward became the king.
