A new patient tower is being built at Memorial Hospital in South Bend.

And the groundbreaking ceremonies are set.

The $232-million expansion project is creating 500 new jobs.

Officials say that the new tower will have rooms that are 50 percent larger than the old ones.

Memorial’s current patient towers were built in 1958, and 1973.

The tower will also have LED lights that can change color to raise awareness for different issues.

The groundbreaking for the ten-story tower is set for mid-October.

The color change thing is not newsworthy. Who gets to use the bigger rooms would be.

What are the other reasons for a 10 story patient tower? Is this area short of capacity regularly? Hospital stays are shorter and shorter, will it include rehab and mental health assistance?
What is the justification? Clearly LED lighting it’s a main justification, I hope.
