A Wanatah woman and her 14-year-old son were killed in a crash involving a semi on U.S. 30 in LaPorte County.
The collision happened around 7:50 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 4, when sheriff’s deputies were summoned to the 6300 west block of U.S. 30 for a crash involving a commercial motor vehicle and a passenger vehicle.
Starke County EMS personnel arrived and advised two occupants of the passenger vehicle were dead at the scene.
The initial crash investigation shows that a white 2019 Mack semi-tractor, driven by a 47-year-old Fulton man was pulling a white 2015 Hyundai trailer. The semi had just exited the Plaza 30 Truck Stop and was beginning to travel eastbound on US 30. While doing so, the trailer separated from the semi-tractor in the eastbound driving lane, just east of the truck stop entrance and exit.
A black 2022 Kia, driven by Angela J. Oehmen, 36, was traveling eastbound on US 30. The Kia collided with the rear of the trailer in the eastbound US 30 driving lane.
Angela was pronounced dead at the scene. Her 14-year-old son, Joseph, a front seat passenger in the vehicle was also pronounced dead at the scene. A second juvenile who was an occupant of the vehicle sustained an upper body injury. That juvenile was transported to an area hospital for treatment.
The semi driver was not injured.
The eastbound lanes of US 30 were closed for several hours for the initial investigation. Toxicology test results are pending. The crash investigation is ongoing.

This will not be a toxicological issue. It will turn out to be an awful oversight or equipment failure.
Any professional driver knows to check the fifth wheel lock routinely. Either it was overlooked, or the equipment failed. Not likely drugs or alcohol but instead an unfortunate and very sad event.
