For the 8th time, this year, an Indiana State Police trooper was struck by a vehicle while their emergency lights were activated.
It was around 11:15 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 30, when Trooper Riley Hieb was inside his vehicle along eastbound I-80/94 at the scene of an earlier crash just involving a semi and a car. That’s when an SUV, driven by Jose Huizar-Hernandez, 67, of Lake Station, rear ended his police car.
The trooper and Hernandez were both taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The Lieutenant Commander of the Lowell post says just one crash into a police car is unacceptable, let alone eight. He says to slow down and obey the “move over” law when you see a stopped police car.

Pay attention! Now a days people treat speed limit signs as speed suggestion signs. What is so important that you need to drive so aggressively? I am tired of seeing rudeness from drivers who weave in and out of traffic because the 40mph limit is too slow! Contrary to what you might think, Main & Grape roads in Mishawaka are not your local Indy 500 speedway!
The accidents you cause and your reckless driving could very well take a member of YOUR family instead of ours. Stop thinking about yourself and think about others. You are not the only human living on this planet. Stop driving like you are.
