Thursday night’s hours-long standoff and shooting in the Lafayette Falls neighborhood in South Bend is now being investigated as a murder-suicide.
Officers were called around 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 1, to the 6400 block of Armstrong Drive where they found Catherine Cleveland, 66, suffering from a gunshot wound.
The woman was taken to the hospital where she succumbed to her injuries.
The suspect, now identified as Alfred Cleveland, 67, barricaded himself in a home. SWAT and crisis negotiators tried to use peaceful means to coax him out of the home and to give himself up. But, South Bend police say that line of communication “broke down.”
Around 11 p.m. SWAT officers used a “chemical agent” to subdue the man. He was found suffering from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, and later died.
This is the second murder-suicide in South Bend in a week.

South Bend has two murder suicides in one week, it’s turning into Los Angeles. No wonder people in surrounding cities and towns don’t want to go there.
