Elkhart considering an amphitheater at the site of the central green

If a proposed amphitheater comes to Elkhart…you might have Weird Al Yankovic to thank for it.

On Monday, city leaders unveiled preliminary drawings for a brand new amphitheater in Elkhart. WSBT reports that the plan would convert the central green next to the Lerner Theater into an amphitheater that would deat up to 8,000 people.

Yankovic suggested the idea in a message to the Lerner’s Executive Director, after walking Main Street and seeing the space when he was in town last year for his sold-out show at the Lerner.

No timeline has been announced and city leaders look forward to gathering community input on the proposed design. Mayor Rod Roberson called the idea “a wonderful way to brand ourselves around what makes us special…which is music.” Elkhart has a legendary history of band instrument manufacturing.

Good idea but where do 8,000 people park in downtown Elkhart ? I would recommend another location with more land for parking, too. The next question is, how does it get paid for ?

The leaders of this idea are CLUELESS! They are clueless of the kind of congestion it will bring to Elkhart. The traffic congestion for a large Learner event or the silly Grand Prix is already too much. They are clueless on how such concerts work logistically. They are clueless about how much sound will be required to fill such a space. The sound will be heard ALL OVER ELKHART and beyond. Why would a person pay for a seat in this venue when for the same price a DVD can be had of their favorite artist to be watched in the comfort of their own home every day of the week and twice on Sunday if they desire all without dealing with drunks, people high on drugs, or plain rude people pushing and shoving others around? How many police officers will be required to support this venue? Where will the tour busses and semis full of equipment park? The first concert that fails due to these concerns will lead to NO MORE CONCERTS because the artists of note will not put up with the foolishness. Besides, who takes advice from Weird AL Yankovich??? No one I know. The committee should not only visit existing venues but go days in advance and see how they are created. Why should taxpayers that care nothing for outdoor concerts in the center of a congested town pay for this?
