A groundbreaking took place on Monday, Sep. 22, for South Bend’s homeless Intake Center. It’s a 25,000-square-foot, permanent low-barrier shelter at 4022 Old Cleveland Road, marking a step in the effort to end chronic homelessness in South Bend.
The facility will include 30 single-occupancy rooms and 45 double-occupancy rooms for a total of 120 beds, along with a dedicated medical clinic, on-site laundry, a full-service kitchen and dining area, spaces for mental-health and addiction-recovery support, outdoor communal areas and a chapel, plus an art workshop and indoor gathering space.
“The whole community has come together over a multiyear process to find a suitable location for this much-needed center,” Executive Director Sheila McCarthy said at the ceremony.
“We’re thrilled to begin construction, providing a dignified place to welcome people out of crisis and into stability.”
Construction is expected to be completed by late 2027.

Making homelessness more comfortable isn’t going to end chronic homelessness.
