A head-on collision on Mayflower Road near Belleville Drive left one man dead and two others seriously injured, prompting activation of the St. Joseph County Fatal Crash Team (FACT).
Police were called to the scene around 10:15 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 12, after a pickup truck traveling southbound crossed the center line and struck an SUV heading northbound, according to initial reports.
Investigators say the SUV was driven by a 48-year-old South Bend woman, who had just exited the U.S. 20 bypass. The pickup truck was driven by a 63-year-old South Bend man.
James Barnes, 58, who was a passenger in the SUV sustained critical injuries and was transported to the hospital along with both drivers. Officials confirmed Thursday that James Barnes later died from his injuries.
FACT investigators continue to examine what caused the truck to cross into the opposite lane.
