A 25-year-old Avilla woman was hospitalized over the weekend after her dog — whose name happens to be Trigger — shot her with a shotgun on Saturday morning, Oct. 24.

The woman was hunting waterfowl at Tri-County Fish and Wildlife Area at about 10 a.m. when she laid her 12-gauge shotgun at her feet and stood up from her chair, according to the Indiana Department of Natural Resources. The safety of the gun wasn’t on.

Trigger stepped on the top of the shotgun, firing the trigger and shooting the woman in her left foot. 

The woman was taken to Kosciusko Community Hospital and later taken to Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne.

Officers found that the woman hadn’t completed a certified hunter education course, according to the Indiana DNR.

DNR officers said that hunters should point the muzzle of a firearm in a safe direction and use the safety mechanism when the gun isn’t in use. Anyone born after Dec. 31, 1986, but take a free certified hunter education course before buying a hunting license.
