Victims of Sunday's deadly toll-road crash in Elkhart County have been identified

The two people who died in a collision on the Indiana Toll Road on around 10:30 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 29, have been identified.

Troopers with the Indiana State Police Toll Road Post responded to the crash near the 87 mile-marker which is on the Elkhart and St. Joseph County line, according to a news release from Indiana State Police.

Troopers arrived on scene to find a single east bound vehicle that ran off the south side of the road and struck a guardrail. The impact caused the car to flip several times before coming to a rest in a ditch, according to the news release.

The force of the collision trapped the driver of the 2001 Buick inside her car and ejected the two passengers. The driver of the car, Linda A. Pohto, 59, of Fairport Harbor, Ohio was killed. Viola M. Pohto, 88, of Fairport Harbor, Ohio, also died, the news release states.

A Denver, Colorado man who is a relative suffered severe injuries but is expected to recover. He was taken to South Bend Memorial Hospital.

A witness to the crash told police that just prior to the collision, the car had passed him at a high rate of speed before striking with the guardrail, the news release states.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
