A Penn High School student is being disciplined after a .22-caliber rifle was found inside the student’s locked vehicle in the school parking lot on Monday, Jan. 11.

School administrators were notified about the gun by another student and confiscated it from the student’s vehicle, according to a statement from Lucha Ramey, director of communications for Penn-Harris-Madison School Corporation. The school contacted the St. Joseph County Police Department’s school resource officer as well.

The student told administrators that the firearm was left in the vehicle by mistake after a hunting trip and that the student didn’t intend to harm anyone at school.

The student has not been identified.

Because possessing a weapon of any kind on PHM property is a violation of student code of conduct, the student will be disciplined accordingly, Ramey said.

An announcement was made to students on Monday about the incident and an email was sent to parents.
