A new recreational bicycle ride this May will highlight parks and bike trails around St. Joseph County.

The Mayors’ Ride is not replacing Bike the Bend, but it will fill the gap left by the ride that was cancelled in 2015 after a rift between event organizers and the South Bend Police Department.

The path of The Mayors’ Ride will begin at the Red Barn at St. Patrick’s County Park in South Bend, Howard Park in South Bend and Central Park in Mishawaka, according to South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg’s office. The path follows streets and bike trails mostly along the St. Joseph River.

“What a great way for Mishawaka, South Bend, and St. Joe County to showcase our parks and bike trails,” Mishawaka Mayor Dave Wood said in a statement. “Biking is for people of all ages and this is a perfect opportunity for families to kick start a healthier lifestyle at this family-friendly event.”

Unlike Bike the Bend, vehicles will not be restricted on streets, but there will be police officers from the South Bend Police, Mishawaka Police and St. Joseph County Police departments monitoring a few intersections.

The ride is from 7 to 11 a.m. Sunday, May 22, and is open to families and adults. The event is free, but Buttigieg’s office recommends a $10 per person donation for Bike Michiana Coalition’s education initiatives.

There will be several bike safety workshops for children in the weeks leading up to the event, but specific details have not yet been announced.
