Former Elkhart Police chief arrested after allegedly driving while intoxicated

elkhartpolice.org

A former Elkhart Police chief was arrested earlier this week after being found driving intoxicated.

53-year-old Laura Koch served as chief from September 2014 until January 2016. Court documents say an Indiana State Police trooper was driving on County Road 17 when he noticed the vehicle in front of him swerve across the center line multiple times.

After pulling the vehicle over, the trooper said he could smell a strong odor of alcohol.

Koch told the trooper that she was texting to tell her son she was on her way to pick him up from school, but while she was looking for her registration the trooper noticed a glass alcohol bottle inside that was confirmed to be open and nearly empty.

Koch said she had not had any alcohol, though the trooper conducted three standard field sobriety tests which were failed.

The trooper attempted to administer a portable breath test, but Koch seemed to be stalling and only a short incomplete sample was obtained. However, a BAC of .179 was found, which is more than two times the legal limit in Indiana.

Koch was booked into the jail but released on a $1,500 bond.
