A 66-year-old Michigan City man has been arrested and charged with multiple felony counts following an investigation into allegations of sexual abuse involving a child known to him.
According to the Michigan City Police Department, officers began investigating on November 3 after receiving a complaint that an adult male had engaged in sexual encounters with a child. Detective Corporal Adam Brinkman worked alongside the Indiana Department of Child Services and determined that Billy Cannon had allegedly been involved in several incidents of sexual misconduct with the victim.
Detectives executed a search warrant at Cannon’s home on November 7, where he was taken into custody. Police say evidence collected at the scene supported the victim’s statements.
Following a review by the LaPorte County Prosecutor’s Office, Superior Court 1 Judge Jaime Oss found probable cause on November 10 to charge Cannon with:
Two counts of Child Molesting – Defendant at Least 21 Years of Age (Level 1 Felony)
One count of Rape (Level 3 Felony)
Three counts of Child Molesting – Fondling or Touching a Child Under 14 (Level 4 Felony)
One count of Resisting Law Enforcement (Class A Misdemeanor)
One count of Inappropriate Communication with a Child (Class B Misdemeanor)
Cannon is being held at the LaPorte County Jail on a $100,000 cash bond.
Police say the investigation remains ongoing and are asking anyone with additional information to contact Detective Corporal Adam Brinkman at (219) 874-3221 or by email at abrinkman@emichigancity.com.
