A South Bend man was taken into custody Monday afternoon after a police pursuit ended with a water rescue in the St. Joseph River.

According to the South Bend Police Department, an officer attempted a traffic stop around 1:30 p.m. near Lincoln Way West and Wilber Street after witnessing a traffic violation. The driver refused to stop, leading officers on a brief pursuit.

The chase ended on the east end of the Colfax Avenue Bridge, where the suspect exited the vehicle, jumped over the guardrail, and entered the river. South Bend Police and the South Bend Fire Department’s Swiftwater Team responded, deploying a rescue boat to reach the man.

The suspect, identified as 56-year-old Deron Phillips, was pulled from the water, taken into custody, and transported to a hospital for evaluation. He was later booked into the St. Joseph County Jail pending a charging decision by the St. Joseph County Prosecutor’s Office.
