South Bend Police investigating fatal shooting on southeast side

South Bend Police are investigating a fatal shooting reported on the city’s southeast side.

Officers were dispatched around 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 21, to the 1800 block of East Bowman Street for a disturbance call. When officers arrived, they found a man suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. He later died from his injuries.

The victim’s identity is being withheld pending notification of family members.

Detectives with the South Bend Police Department’s Violent Crimes Unit are working with the St. Joseph County Prosecutor’s Office. Investigators say the case is currently being examined as a possible self-defense or justified shooting, but emphasize the investigation remains active and ongoing.
