Five Elkhart County Jail inmates hospitalized after having seizures

Five Elkhart County Jail inmates were taken to Elkhart General Hospital on Wednesday afternoon, April 29, after they had seizures in the jail.

Inmates alerted jail staff that four other inmates were having seizures at about 12:45 p.m., according to Capt. Jim Bradberry with the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department. While officers were tending to the four inmates, a fifth inmate began seizing.

The five inmates were taken to the hospital in ambulances.

Police smelled a burnt odor in the jail when the seizures happened and other inmates told police that the five hospitalized inmates had been smoking something, Bradberry said.

The identities of the five inmates are not going to be released as the investigating into the incident continues and families must be notified, Bradberry said.
