SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) — Public records say South Bend schools mistakenly overpaid 48 new teachers by a total of $140,000.

District officials previously would not say by how much teachers were overpaid.

The records obtained by the South Bend Tribune say the salaries of 48 of 178 new hires were set too high. The widest gap was a nearly $68,000 salary for one teacher who should have made $47,600. Overpayments of $5,000 or more were made to six teachers.

Salaries were too low for six other teachers, totaling about $3,600. The district will make up the difference.

Reasons officials have given for the mistakes include principals quoting salaries without review and a failure to follow past pay scale practices.

The school board earlier this week approved $175,000 for stipends split among a group of other teachers as a goodwill gesture.
