A woman was taken to Memorial Hospital after she was hit in the face by a foul ball during a South Bend Cubs came at Four Winds Field on Tuesday night, July 21.

The woman was sitting along the first base line past the dugout when she was hit by the ball during the bottom of the seventh inning, Joe Hart, president of the South Bend Cubs, told South Bend Tribune.

Tommie Lee, host of Truth Radio 1340 WTRC-AM, the sister station of 95.3 MNC WTRC-FM, was sitting a few rows behind the woman when the incident happened. He said there was no time for anyone in the audience to move out of the way.

“The sound was sickening,” he said. “It sounded like a bat hit the ball, and then another bat hit the ball (when it hit the woman). I hope she’s going to be OK.”

He said the woman was talking to a friend when the ball hit her. She raised her hands to her face and then slumped down into her seat as medics rushed to help her.

The woman was carried from her seat to the Four Winds Field concourse, Lee said. 

Other baseball fan injuries have created a buzz about fan safety at baseball stadiums around the country.

Hart told South Bend Tribune that Four Winds Field extended protective netting around home plate and to the end of the dugouts on the first and third base lines in 2011 to increase safety for fans.
