INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Gov. Mike Pence is hinting he may finally reveal during his State of the State speech his thoughts on adding LGBT civil rights protections into Indiana law.

The socially conservative Pence has for months refused to say where he stands, explaining that he’s still “studying” adding discrimination protections for lesbian, gay bisexual and transgender people in public accommodation, housing and employment.

But he told reporters at the start to the 2016 legislative session that he sees next Tuesday’s State of the State speech as a “great opportunity” to communicate with voters and would “likely” take advantage of it.

The subject of LGBT civil rights has proven challenging for GOP lawmakers ever since controversy erupted last spring over Indiana’s religious objections law, which critics said sanctioned discrimination.
