In 2014, 362 kids were found living in an Indiana home where a meth lab was found, according to the 2016 Kids Count report from the Indiana Youth Institute.

Those children are often taken into foster care if their parent or guardian is arrested, WSBT reported.

“Children have to be taken away from the parents,” Sgt. Chad Hill with the Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department told WSBT. “That’s probably one of the saddest things actually. I see his parents when they’re into meth that strong, they actually don’t fight as much. Their sole concentration is maintaining and keeping that high.”

Kids who are placed into foster care at an early age because of a parent’s arrest can sometimes develop mental health issues or struggle with having appropriate relationships with others as they grow up.

Counseling is often recommended for children placed into foster care after a parent’s arrest, which can help counteract some of those negative effects.
