Company hired to remove bats from Terre Haute school gym

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (AP) — Officials in Terre Haute have closed a middle school gymnasium because bats were found in it.

Franklin Fennell is Vigo County School Corporation’s director of facility support and transportation. He says the school as “a bat issue.” The (Terre Haute) Tribune-Star reports that the last week before school started Tuesday bats were spotted in the gym at Sarah Scott Middle School. School officials closed the gym and found a company that specializes in bat removal.

The doors to the gym now have black and yellow tape across them and signs that say “Do Not Use.”

The company has ordered supplies and expects to start work next week. The company will create a way for the bats to escape on their own because some may be protected species.
