A 16-year-old boy was taken into custody after Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department officers say he stole a 15-passenger van from the grounds of Bashor Children’s Home on County Road 15 in Goshen.

The teen took off in the vehicle around 9:20 a.m. on Wednesday, April 12, according to the sheriff’s department.

The teen crashed the van into a post near the entrance to the Ox Bow Park just before 9:30 a.m., then took off on foot but was found by police in a wooded area inside the park a half-hour later, the sheriff’s department reported.

The teen was not injured in the crash.

He was taken to the Elkhart County Juvenile Detention Center and faces charges of auto theft, leaving the scene of a property damage collision, and for operating a vehicle while never licensed.

Use some commonsense people! The kid is obviously troubled. Further, he didn’t get the vehicle off the property. Throwing the book at him is not going to help anybody. Your organization is supposed to help kids like him, not send them down the river. Sometimes a little bit of grace along with consequence is the best choice.
