A bubbling barrel-full of liquid caused a scare in Mishawaka Thursday morning.

South Bend Fire’s HAZMAT team was called to the Mishawaka household hazardous waste facility, located on East 5th Street, just before 10 a.m. Thursday. ABC 57 reports a barrel had been brought in from a Mishawaka school and someone noticed the liquid inside the metal barrel was bubbling.

The barrel was carefully placed into a larger barrel and samples were taken of the liquid, which had been sitting in the barrel underneath a stadium for several years.

South Bend Fire Battalion Chief Bob Means says fire crews believe the liquid is diesel fuel. The fuel was taken to a private environmental company for handling and disposal.
