South Bend Common Council wants action to keep homeless warm

Last January, the official point-in-time count of homeless people totaled about 5,500 in Indiana (V. Carter)

The South Bend Common Council wants to know why so many of the city’s homeless are still out in the cold.

With temperatures as low as 20 degrees colder than average expected in South Bend this week, along with more snow, there are questions about why the weather amnesty shelter on Tutt Street still hasn’t opened.

On Sunday, Nov. 11, Oliver Davis, Vice President of the Common Council, called for more pressure to be put on the state for the necessary paperwork needed to open the site. The city is still waiting a permit to perform a fire inspection.

The Tutt Street facility was supposed to open on November 1 but was pushed back to December 1.

During the city council meeting on Monday, Nov. 12, members presented a resolution asking for local governments open up warming sites until the weather amnesty site is opened up for use and to come together, next year, to plan solutions for homeless populations.
